Our History
Way Back in 1964...
Newly discharged Army Veteran Tom Sprouse needed a job. After searching for quite a long time, he was offered one at a very busy locksmith shop on Staten Island, NY. He was hired just to help out—sweep up, organize tools—but he quickly showed an interest in the trade.
Tom started training at Minkle Safe and Lock Co., and after a few years, he and a co-worker left to start their own business, "Tom and Don Locksmiths." They were successful, but as his family grew, Tom wanted a change of pace. He moved the family to Branchburg, NJ, and took a job with the NYC Police Department, becoming the only locksmith to service all NYPD buildings.
Simultaneously, he started Branchburg Locksmith, working nights and weekends.
Learning the Trade at Age 7
This is where 7-year-old Tim Sprouse started learning the craft. At first, it was just the simple things. But growing up in a locksmith shop, Tim quickly gained skills and experience that most technicians take decades to acquire. By his teenage years, he was already servicing large accounts.
In 1984, Tom's health started failing, and the original shop closed in 1987. But the seed was planted.
1995: Sprouse's Locksmith is Born
In 1995, Tim opened his first locksmith business, Sprouse's Locksmith. It quickly grew to three locations in NJ. Over the years, the business evolved, operating under names like Lockpros and Security Technologies as Tim expanded into high-tech security, CCTV, and biometric access control for large national providers.
But in 2018, we decided to bring it all back home. We changed the name back to Sprouse's Locksmith. Same great service, same owner, but with the family name on the truck.
The 3rd Generation
In 2015, Tim started training the 3rd generation of Sprouse locksmiths. Today, the legacy continues with Tim's daughter, Brenda, and trusted master technician Ryan Robustelli, ensuring that the craftsmanship and integrity Tom Sprouse started in 1964 lives on.
