Ford's PATS System: What You Need to Know

Ford introduced the Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) in 1996, and it's been standard on virtually every Ford since. PATS uses a transponder chip embedded in the key head that communicates with the vehicle's PCM (powertrain control module). If the chip isn't recognized, the engine will crank but not start.

There are two PATS generations:

• PATS 1 (1996–2001): Requires a minimum of two programmed keys to add a new one. If you're down to zero keys, the PCM must be reprogrammed.
• PATS 2 / SecuriLock (2002+): More sophisticated. Many models in this era require a dealer-level scan tool or a locksmith with OBD programming equipment to add keys. We have both.

2018+ Ford F-150, Super Duty, and Expedition models use a more advanced system tied to the BCM (Body Control Module). These require PATS programming via OBD-II and, in some cases, a PIN code retrieval step. We handle this routinely.
