GM's Key Security Systems: VATS, PassLock, and Transponder
Chevrolet has used several anti-theft systems over the years, and knowing which one your vehicle has matters:
- VATS (1986–1995): The original GM anti-theft system. Uses a resistor pellet embedded in the key blade. There are 15 different resistance values — we carry all of them.
- PassKey II (1992–2002): Similar to VATS but with improved electronics. Common on older Silverados, Blazers, and Camaros.
- PassLock (1994–2006): Doesn't use a chip in the key itself — instead it monitors the ignition cylinder. If the lock cylinder is replaced without proper relearn, the vehicle won't start. We know the relearn procedure.
- Transponder / BCM (2003+): Modern Chevrolet vehicles use a transponder chip programmed to the vehicle's BCM via OBD-II.
- Proximity / Push-to-Start (2010+): Smart key fobs used on Equinox, Malibu, Traverse, Tahoe, Suburban, and newer Silverados.
